Season 24 Rule 5 Draft Recap

 

10. Bobby Straily-1^st Rnd/11^th Pick Overall-Oklahoma/  -rkdixon-Straily was a light hitting, fairly slow footed, defensively awesome infielder. Twice stole double digits in bases but never did much with the bat sporting a career 228 AVG and a 289 OBP. Made 48 career Plus plays against 0 negative plays, mostly playing SS/3^rd and CF

9. Herman DiSarcina-2^nd Rnd/12^th Pick Overall-Rochester/Madison-jwperry- Herman swiped 91 bases over his last three season in the majors. His career ended shortly after that which is a bit of a shame as he was starting to become a solid table setter

8. Ernie Jordan-1^st Rnd/7^th Pick Overall-Mexico City/New Orleans-Feamster- The big lefty only played parts of 5 seasons in the majors but did have 2 pretty good years going 8-14 as a starter in season 25 while throwing over 200 innings. Moved to the bullpen the next season and went 4-1 with a 3.89 ERA

7. Julian Sierra-1^st Rnd/4^th Pick Overall-Charlotte/Trenton-Dwobble- Not much of a starter, but did enjoy a decent amount of success when used as a bullpen arm. His 3 best seasons saw him pitch 101 games with a 10-6 record and 10 saves and a 3.83 ERA.

6. Tony Alvarez-2^nd Rnd/18^th Pick Overall-Oklahoma/  -rkdixon- A very bad hitter (202 Avg-547 OBP)  Did hit 10 homers one season while also stealing 12 bases. Mostly known for his superior glove work as a SS he made 77 Plus plays and 16 more while playing CF/2^nd/3^rd/LF.

5. Dallas Bolsinger-2^nd Rnd/16^th Pick Overall-Fresno/Boise-hofstad_c- Won himself a Gold Glove at Catcher a year after winning a World Series Ring. Three times he popped off for over 11 homers. Pair that up with a solid 274 AVG and plus glove skills you have a steal of a pick in the Rule 5.

4. Joaquin Cairo-2^nd Rnd/15^th Pick Overall-Charlotte/Trenton-Dwobble- Worked as a pretty solid back end SP for Charlotte, Double digits in wins twice and sported a career 4.25 ERA.  With over 1000 innings in the majors he could be counted on to be a solid contributor while pitching

3. Clint Norton-1^st Rnd/1^st Pick Overall-Rochester/Madison-jwperry- Rochester 2^nd player to make the top ten. Norton had the longest major league career of any player selected. Hit and stole a matching 100 homers and 100 bases. While not a great fielder at either SS or CF the Walla Walla native was a solid producer.

2. Doc Spivey-1^st Rnd/5^th Pick Overall-Jackson-berrysboys- An All-Star the year he was selected while hitting 25 homers with an ops of 875. Between season 25 and 31 was just very average but did break out in his second last season when he hit 26 more homers while driving in 90 runs. Also made 40 plus plays at 2^nd base for his career.

1. Tomas Polonia-1^st Rnd/6^th Pick Overall-Salem-Auggieward- While only a 255 hitter on his career Polonia was good for 189 homers and 125 steals.  6 times he went over 20 homers while also playing a very solid CF (33 Plus Plays) for his career. This marks back to back seasons where Salem has picked the best player in the Rule 5 Draft.

Upperdeck Season 43 Rule 5 Draft Review

 

Here is a ranking of the Top 10 Players drafted this season in the Rule 5 based on their performance this season

10-9-8 Pawtucket

Cesar Olmedo-19^th Pick-SP-The 22 year old projects to  be a solid back end rotation and didn’t really disappoint this season. Compiling an 8-13 record over 28 starts and 160IP. His WHIP (1.53) and ERA (5.23) are on the high side but he has some upside potential.

Paddy Ransom-8^th Pick-SU- A fairly limited sample size 60IP but sported a solid 4.01 ERA with 2 saves. Has the ability to pitch multiple innings. It will be interesting to see how he is used going forward

Cookie Chavez-22^nd Pick-SU- The third player to make the top ten drafted by Pawtucket. Pitched a workhorse 88innings with just a 1.31 WHIP and solid 4.57 ERA. At 26 he has maxed out in his potential but can provide solid bullpen help.

7^th-Tim Nicholas-1^st Pick-Boise-SU- Taken 1^st overall this diminutive lefty (5’8) has electric stuff. 63k’s in 79 innings. Can pitch multiple innings and at age 22 his future looks bright.

6^th-Cecil Todd-12^th Pick-Baltimore-SU- Only 43 innings but a very solid 1.23 WHIP and 3.56 ERA. Has the stuff to pitch more often and more innings. But as a lefty may find himself in more of a specialty role

5^th-Felipe Johnson-6^th Pick-NY/Now Sacramento-C-  Played in 159 games, mostly as a defensive specialist with some starts VS lefties. Solid pop, 8 homers in 279AB’s , his future lies on the bench as a backup catcher.

4^th-Anthony Evert-5^th Pick-Houston-SU-  Very small sample, but he put up very strong numbers and looks like he can actually get better. Has closer capability if given the chance

3^rd-Eli Montero-4^th Pick-Sacramento-LF- Montero probably only has bench ability but he did smack 10 homers in 267 AB’s while hitting a very solid .285 with a  800 OPS

2^nd-Milton Dickerson-11^th Pick-Chicago-SP 200+ innings from a rule 5 draft pick is a huge get. After never pitching above High A he won 10 games in the majors and could win many more over his career.

1^st-Brent DeRoas-14^th Pick-Montreal now Boise- 1^st-A little mad at myself that I drafted this guy but couldn’t find time for him. Smacked 5 homers in ST then 30 more during the regular season with 85 RBI and a 809 OPS. Is capable of holding a COF/CIF rotation spot with 25-35 homers a year

Commentary

Risers

The Houston Colt 45's jumped an incredible 15 spots after winning nine of their last 10, including a five-game win streak to close out the season's first half. They enter the break at 42-49 and 10 games back of the division lead.

The Scranton Schrutes had an equally impressive leap, rising 14 spots to No. 2 on the strength of an eight-game win streak that has propelled them to just one game back of the Philadelphia Penn Quakers in the NL East, who dropped one spot to No. 3 in this week's rankings.

The Indianapolis Swinging Hoosiers rose five spots to number 20 after winning seven of 10, but remain seven games under .500 and nine games out of first place in the AL East.

Fallers

The Scottsdale Dirtbags have had a rough couple of weeks and in the midst of a six-game losing streak which has seem them fall 16 spots from No. 6 in the last poll to No. 22 today. They're now three games under .500 and 17 games back of perennial favorite Anaheim Anteaters, the No. 1 team in today's rankings.

The Helena Roughnecks dropped 10 spots to No. 23 after dropping seven of 10. Helena, who has a 28-18 record on the road but just a 14-31 record at home, will look to make a statement as it starts the second half with two road series against division leader Salem Witch Hunts and the struggling Boise Potatoes, No. 32 in this week's ranking.

Trenton jakes jokers dropped from No. 3 in the last ranking all the way No. 12 today after dropping their last five heading into the break. They remain 11 games over .500 and in prime position for a Wild Card berth.

Anteater data live in the Upper Deck historical stats report

Anaheim Anteater hitting data is now reportable 

    Nothing to read really other than Anteater data is now live in the report. I still want to fine tune the reports before I publish them for you all. Hoping by the end of the month. Also, I will probably start working on another teams hitting, an AL team for sure. Doing 2 back-to-back NL teams is brutal, seems the NL uses a lot more players.

Advanced Standings Trend Report

 Advanced Standings Trend Report

    I have created a new report, this report lets you see team by team trend data for things you usually see on the Advanced standings page. Here I have runs selected over the life of the world by season. Notice the big difference from seasons 10-20 compared to the dead-ball ear of 30-40. Very peculiar. The highest scoring season was 17 with 26,790 runs scored and season 35 the lowest with 22,699. Season 37 had the most 1-run games with 755 and season 17 the lowest with 640.  One cool feature about the report is depending on what teams are selected, their logo will dynamically generate in the header image.  The development will continue!
